Manchester United and Liverpool are involved in negotiations to become founder members of a new FIFA-backed tournament which would shatter the landscape domestic European football.
The proposed European Premier League is likely to involve the leading 18 teams on the continent and the new format, according to Sky News, is being developed by world football’s governing body FIFA.
United and Liverpool are not the only English clubs said to have been sounded out with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham reported to have been approached.
The competition, which would ultimately undermine the UEFA-run Champions League, could commence as early as 2022 and would see the highest ranked teams progress to a knockout tournament.
