Van de Beek was expected to play against Eintracht, but De Telegraaf claim he was omitted after there was progress in his possible departure from Ajax.
Ajax boss Erik ten Hag confirmed after the game Van de Beek was not injured.
He said: ‘There are indeed developments that keep him out of the squad [to face Eintracht Frankfurt].’
It is unclear which club has stepped up their interest or whether the player or the club made the decision to drop him from the squad.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is thought to be a big fan on Van de Beek, while the Dutchman’s former coach Ronald Koeman has just taken charge at Barcelona.
Koeman coached Van de Beek on in the international side and is reportedly planning a massive overhaul of the Barcelona squad.
Van de Beek was quizzed about his future this month, but insisted he was happy to stay at Aax.
‘It is very messy, in any case a very messy period in terms of transfers,’ the Netherlands international told Fox Sports.
‘Nothing is certain yet. I am still a player of Ajax and I am still proud to be there.
‘I’m still here and after all these years I still have a lot of fun. If I also play at Ajax next season, I still have a lot of fun. You won’t hear me complaining.’
