The 23-year-old is the first permanent signing of the summer for the Red Devils and his arrival will ease the frustrations of fans over United’s lack of activity in the transfer market so far.
The Netherlands international has won 10 caps for his country and scored 41 goals in 175 appearances for Ajax from the middle of midfield, reaching double figures in all competitions in each of the last three seasons.
United have long been interested in Van de Beek, with Real Madrid and Barcelona also keen on his signature, but as interest from Spain cooled, the Premier League giants have pounced for the creative midfielder.
Confirming the deal today in an understated tweet, United said: ‘
‘Hi everyone, Hope you’re well. Just announcing @Donny_Beek6. Regards’
A January move for the Dutchman had been tried, but didn’t get off the ground. which led to United signing Bruno Fernandes instead, with the Portuguese proving an instant hit since his arrival from Sporting.
Speaking after a deal was agreed, Van de Beek’s father, Andre, told Omroep Gelderland: ‘This is a dream come true. Our local village is very proud.
‘It’s the perfect moment for him to make this step to such a beautiful club, but Ajax will always remain in our heart. ‘A lot of clubs were interested, but Donny took this decision himself.’
Manchester United remain heavily linked with Borussia Dortmund and England winger Jadon Sancho, but the enormous £108m asking price is proving to be a giant stumbling block.
The 20-year-old is keen on the move to Old Trafford and he remains their primary transfer target, but with Dortmund standing firm on their valuation and United unwilling to meet it, a deal appears nowhere close.
