Manchester United failed in an attempt to sign Fiorentina winger Federico Chiesa, according to reports.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to strengthen the right side of his attack and has made the signing of Jadon Sancho his top priority for the transfer window.

But Dortmund have stood firm over their €120 million (£109.6m) asking price and Sancho now looks on course to stay with the Bundesliga club for another season.

United have been exploring alternative signings to Sancho and have targeted Ousmane Dembele and Watford winger Ismaila Sarr.

But according to The Telegraph, United have also made an approach to sign Chiesa, however, their offer was rejected by Fiorentina.

The report claims that United wanted to sign the 22-year-old on loan for the season.

But the Italy international is now believed to be on the verge of joining Juventus on loan, with the Serie A champions having an option to buy for €50m (£45m).

United are also hopeful of landing a new striker and a left-back before the window closes.

The club have held talks with Porto over a deal for Brazilian left-back Alex Telles but an agreement over a transfer fee has not yet been reached.

United are also exploring the possibility of signing Edinson Cavani on a free transfer, but the 33-year-old is reportedly demanding at least a two-year contract.
