Manchester United are hoping to sign a striker before the upcoming transfer deadline and have held talks with free agent Edinson Cavani, while they are also monitoring Real Madrid’s Luka Jovic.
Cavani is currently without a club after he left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season and represents an appealing option given the lack of transfer fee.
Jovic, meanwhile, has struggled since moving to Real Madrid from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer and United are open to offering him an escape route from the Santiago Bernabeu to revitalise his career.
The Premier League giants have opened talks both with Cavani’s representatives and Real Madrid as they look to land a striker before the transfer window slams shut next Monday, according to Di Marzio.
United have been using Anthony Martial in the No. 9 role, with Odion Ighalo providing backup for the France internationa, but the former Watford striker’s loan deal expires in January.
Signing a striker would allow Martial to potentially move out wide and rotate with Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford, as well as playing through the middle.
The ultra-experienced Cavani has been capped 116 times by Uruguay, won six Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and is the French club’s all-time record goalscorer.
The 33-year-old had been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid but they have already signed his compatriot Luis Suarez, who began his career in the Spanish capital with a devastating display in last weekend’s win over Granada.
Donny van der Beek remains United’s only high-profile signing so far this summer but Solskjaer remains hopeful of signing a new centre-half and a full-back, as well as adding to his forward options.
