The defender has a release clause of around £42million in his contract but it cannot be activated until the end of the current campaign.
With such widespread knowledge of the release clause, clubs are already queuing up to convince Upamecano to sign for them and United had been at the head of the line.
However, the Athletic claim that United’s interest in the France international has cooled and that it’s Bayern Munich that now lead the way for his signature.
Whether United have cooled their interest since it became apparent that Upamecano would opt for a move elsewhere remains to be seen.
Upamecano featured in a 5-0 defeat against United in the Champions League earlier this season and the France international was far from his best as Marcus Rashford scored a hat-trick.
Solskjaer remains keen to strengthen his defence but the Athletic claim his preference has moved from Upamecano.
David Alaba and Jerome Boateng are coming towards the end of their careers at the Allianz Arena, meaning Upamecano would likely become a regular starter for the Champions League holders.
It’s thought the defender is happy with life in Germany and would prefer to join the Bundesliga champions than move to England.
