The Dutchman started his first Champions League game for the club in Wednesday night’s 5-0 destruction of RB Leipzig, putting in an assured performance at the top of United’s midfield diamond.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken flak for Van de Beek’s limited role, as he is yet to start a Premier League match since making the £40million move from Ajax back in the summer.
But former Red Devils and Bayern midfielder Hargreaves believes that Van de Beek’s versatility and wide range of abilities makes him an invaluable asset going forward.
‘I think he’s a really good player,’ Hargreaves told BT Sport.
‘He hasn’t had the opportunity to show it. He could be like what Thomas Muller is for Bayern Munich – the style.
‘Everybody tried to get Thomas Muller out of the team, but once he’s in, you can’t get him out in terms of goals, assists, he’s very unselfish, he can press the ball, he works in a midfield three, he can play as an 8 or a 10.
‘[Van de Beek] is one of those… once he’s in the team, Ole is going to find it hard to get him out.’
‘Donny is a fantastic player and a fantastic boy,’ the Norwegian boss told BT Sport after the game.
‘You see the work he puts down both on and off the ball, you see the defensive shape with him, he covers the ground and he’s so clever with his movement.
‘So I’m so pleased with both of them.’
