Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to make Netherlands international Van de Beek, 23, his first signing of the summer after Manchester United agreed a £40million fee with Ajax.
Van de Beek has developed into one of Ajax’s most important players since making his first-team debut in 2015 and helped the club win the Eredivisie and reach the Champions League semi-final two seasons ago.
His arrival at Old Trafford could be bad news for one player, however, with former Premier League star Murphy claiming Pogba could now be set to leave the club.
French World Cup-winner Pogba has been persistently linked with a move away from Manchester United over the past 12 months but the coronavirus pandemic has seemingly ensured he will remain at the Theatre of Dreams for at least one more season.
Murphy told talkSPORT: ‘I’m just thinking about where Van de Beek is going to play…
‘Playing with Fernandes and Pogba? Do you really think that?
‘Do you know what I think? I think that Pogba could be off. That signing to me says Pogba is off.
‘I don’t know why, something just tells me he will leave. I know he can play as a number six, in the holding role, but he’s not a defensive midfielder as such.
‘He likes to get in the box and score a goal, we’ve seen that. He’s technically good and he’s an all-round, energetic box-to-box midfielder.
Meanwhile, Van de Beek’s Netherlands team-mates, Virgil van Dijk, believes he is taking a ‘great step’ by joining Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Manchester United.
Asked if he is trying to change Van de Beek’s mind about joining United, Van Dijk replied: ‘No. I wish Donny all the best.
‘It’s fantastic for him and great for Dutch football. It’s another great step to another beautiful club for a Dutch player.’
