Manchester United are targeting Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres as an alternative signing to Raphael Varane, according to reports.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to strengthen the heart of his defence this summer and United have been searching for potential options at centre-back.
Last week, reports claimed that United have been given the green light to sign Varane this summer, with Real Madrid open to selling the France international at the end of the season.
Varane will have just one year remaining on his contract this summer and Madrid would rather get a fee for the 27-year-old than see him leave on a free transfer in 2022.
But according to Manchester Evening News, Torres is also on United’s radar and the Villarreal defender is considered as a viable alternative to Varane.
The report claims that Manchester City are also showing an interest in Torres, but United are ‘more likely’ to make a move this summer.
Villarreal are reportedly demanding a €65 million (£55m) fee for the 24-year-old.
Speaking last month, former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla, who played alongside Torres in his final season at Villarreal, believes United’s latest target is suited to Barcelona’s style of football.
‘I think Pau Torres is a brutal player. Xavi asks me a lot about him. He is a young player, I think he is a brutal footballer,’ he told RAC1.
‘He has a great personality. He has more Barcelona style, he gets the ball very well and he has a very good vision game.’
