United have been dominant in Europe, recording victories in their two opening clashes against Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig.
In the league, however, it has been a completely different story for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. Their loss to Arsenal on Sunday was their third defeat from their first six Premier League games this season.
But Owen believes the Red Devils will bounce back when they travel to Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday and pick up all three points with a 2-0 victory.
‘They have been excellent in Europe, but just can’t find any rhythm in the league. Back on European duty, I think they can get another positive result. United seem like a side that are more suited to playing away from home and are at their best hitting on the counter-attack.
‘Ole Gunnar Solkjaer will see this as the ideal opportunity to bounce back after the weekend defeat to Arsenal, and I think they will take the points home to Old Trafford.’
Chelsea go into their game against Rennes after earning four points from their first two Champions League clashes against Sevilla and Krasnodar this season.
Owen talked up Frank Lampard’s side’s improved defence and predicted that the Blues will beat the Ligue 1 side 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
‘Since their 3-3 draw at home to Southampton, Chelsea have gone 4 games on the bounce without conceding a goal,’ Owen said.
‘The Blues have certainly turned the corner after a sluggish start to the season, and I think they’ll come out on top at home to Rennes here.’
But despite their issues in defence, Owen feels his former side can edge a 2-1 win away in Italy.
The ex-Reds striker said: ‘Atalanta have been a joy to watch so far this season! They are a dangerous outfit, and with Liverpool’s frailties at the back just now, the Italians will fancy themselves to cause some problems.
‘Despite conceding goals, Liverpool are finding a way to win at the moment. That’s the mark of champions, and I think whilst Atalanta will be a huge test, I fancy the Reds to come out on top.’
Michael Owen’s Champions League predictions
Istanbul Basaksehir 0-2 Manchester United
Chelsea 2-0 Rennes
Atalanta 1-2 Liverpool
Manchester City 4-0 Olympiakos
Owen also predicted a comfortable 4-0 victory for Manchester City when they host Greek side Olympiakos at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.
‘Manchester City chalked up their second clean sheet in a row against Sheffield United at the weekend,’ Owen added.
‘This will be music to the ears of City fans who were beginning to question their sides back line. The more clean sheets you get, the more you grow in confidence, and I think the Citizens will make it three in a row against their Greek opponents with a comfortable win.’
