WWE has a long history of guest stars stepping into the world of wrestling – but some names are more surprising than others.
However, do you remember when the likes of Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe and Hugh Jackman got involved?
With the help of WWE’s UK team, let’s take a look back at some of the most shocking celebrity cameos in recent memory…
5. Akinfenwa declares himself for WWE Draft
OK, we’re kind of cheating with this one – but you can forgive us when it’s still so fresh in our minds.
Wycombe Wanderers forward Akinfenwa promised to bring Beast Mode to WWE as he publicly declared himself for the draft and had some fighting words for both Drew McIntyre and Brock Lesnar.
Although the WWE Champ seems ready for a fight, it looks like we might have to wait a little longer – but they certainly got everyone talking!
4. Jermain Defoe’s mixed reaction in Newcastle
Five years ago, then-Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe received a ‘mixed reaction’ to say the least when he appeared as a guest timekeeper at the Metro Centre during WWE’s UK tour.
Celebrity guests are to be expected at these events, but Defoe was never going to get universe adulation considering only that weekend he scored the winning goal in the Tyne-Wear derby.
His appearance couldn’t have gone any other way…
3. The Special One watches Raw in London
We’re going back to 2007 for this one, when Jose Mourinho took his kids to Earls Court as Raw rolled into town.
The then-Chelsea boss said at the time: ‘WWE came to my house because of them. For me, it’s great to be with my kids, and to be around the people they admire very much; I think that is very cool.’
Maybe we could get the Special One back on screen one day – Raw or SmackDown could do with a General Manager!
2. Hugh Jackman faces ‘Magento’
In 2014, Wolverine star Hugh Jackman got physical when faces with his old enemy Magneto – this time played by WWE jokester Damien Sandow.
It was deliberately ridiculous and played for laughs, and Jackman really got into the spirit of things.
Eventually, he hit a sweet-looking hip toss on Sandow, which set up Dolph Ziggler for his Zig-Zag move as they stood tall to end the memorable skit.
1. Rooney slaps King Barrett
In one of WWE’s most surprising moments, Wayne Rooney actually slapped current NXT commentator Wade Barrett – at the time, wrestling under the ‘king’ moniker – during a Raw event in Manchester in 2015.
The Preston-born wrestler ripped into the then-United captain – and his team’s chances of winning the Premier League title – but really crossed the line when he brought the star’s son into it.
Sadly, this was a one-off appearance – but Rooney in a WWE ring is something we’d have loved to see.
