Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has brushed off rumours that Kalidou Koulibaly could be set for a move before the transfer deadline and insists the defender is ‘happy’ at the club.
Koulibaly is regarded as one of the finest centre-backs in European football and has been heavily linked with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City in recent weeks.
However, Napoli have slapped an eye-watering £80million price tag on their prized possession which is deemed too high by the Premier League duo, given the Senegal international turns 30 next summer.
And the Serie A outfit are confident Koulibaly will still be their player when the transfer window closes next week.
‘Our squad is complete, so will now try to release players who won’t have much time on the pitch,’ Giuntoli told Sky Italia.
‘I think Koulibaly is staying, we are very happy and so is he.
‘He has three years on his current deal, I believe he is staying.’
Recent reports in France claimed Liverpool were using Sadio Mane to convince his Senegal team-mate to join him on Merseyside.
However, Klopp has since revealed that he expects no further additions through the doors at Anfield despite the club’s injury problems in defence.
‘I don’t expect a lot to happen to be honest,’ the Liverpool head coach said.
‘You think you are well covered, we have three absolutely top centre-halves, young players in line, Fabinho at the back if you want and then all of a sudden three players are out for a few days and that is not nice.
‘But you cannot solve that in the transfer market. That is just not possible.
‘If the situation stays like it is at the moment then there will be nothing.
‘All the rest, we are in quite a good place squad-wise and what the outgoings will be I have no idea at the moment. We will see.’
