The Germany international has so far struggled to replicate that good form, despite bagging a hat-trick in the 6-0 Carabao Cup win over Barnsley and providing a fine assist for Calum Hudson-Odoi’s goal in the 3-3 draw with West Bromich Albion in the league.
While his compatriot Werner has looked relatively sharper, the 24-year-old has registered just one goal for the Blues so far.
With the pair due to go off on international duty with Germany, Nevin says they will benefit from more game time to build up their fitness and expects them to ‘explode’ when they return.
‘We are still waiting for the expected explosion of goals from the newer players,’ Nevin told the club’s official website.’
‘Obviously Kai Havertz (three), Ben Chilwell (one) and Timo Werner (one) are each already off the mark, but it still feels like Timo and Kai are just bubbling under ready to explode onto the scene.
‘For once I think the Chelsea staff might be absolutely delighted to see many of these players leave on international duty, but why?
‘Unless they are injured on international duty, they will all come back in better condition than when they left, especially if they can get a full game or two under their belts for their own countries.’
