The Nigerian Flamingos advanced to the quarterfinals of this year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup with a commanding 4-0 victory over Ecuador on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
The Nigerian under-17 team demonstrated to the world that their third-place result at the last finals was no accident with a convincing victory.
Following their 4-1 victory over New Zealand in their opening game, the Flamingos have secured a maximum of six points from their opening two games, scoring eight goals and conceding just one.
Nigeria 4-0 Ecuador
In the 26th minute, Captain Taiwo Afolabi was obstructed in the area, and Shakirat Moshood stepped up to send the busy goalkeeper Maria Rodriguez the wrong way from the penalty spot.
Harmony Chidi eventually scored her first goal of the competition in the second half, assisted by Aishat Animashaun in the 54th minute.
Peace Effiong scored the third goal and in additional time, Moshood scored Nigeria’s fourth goal after Chidi found her on the right.
On Tuesday night, the Flamingos will play the host country Dominican Republic as they aim to make it three out of three in the group phase.
