There has been a major restructure at Old Trafford, with John Murtough appointed as the new Football Director and Matt Judge taking the new title of Director of Football Negotiations.
While Murtough is overseeing recruitment and football operations, Fletcher has a more varied role as Technical Director, as described by Solskjaer.
‘A few months back when we were making the final decision, there were also other things in the pipeline for Fletch,’ Solskjaer told a press conference.
‘We moved Mark Dempsey back down to the Academy and there was a coaching spot.
‘If there was one thing I was sure of, it was that we cannot lose Darren. We wanted Darren at Man United. He has the history of the club. He was brought up here from when he was a young boy to a Champions League winner, a serial winner.
‘His DNA was what we want. Then he went away. He has fresh ideas as well as the Man United side of it. He’s been outside with different clubs. He has a bright eye for football, a really keen eye and lots of development with the youngsters.
‘For me, now he can combine these two, a little less coaching, and have an influence on the recruitment. He can speak to players and sell Man United as the club he knows it is.’
‘In this new role, the first in our history, he will deliver technical advice across all aspects of the football department as well as contributing to the communication and delivery of our football philosophy across all areas of the club.’
