Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Donny van de Beek will play a key role in Manchester United’s season despite the subdued start to his career at Old Trafford.

The Netherlands international joined United in a £35 million deal in the summer but is yet to start a Premier League game this term.

Van de Beek also made a late substitute appearance in United’s victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

However, ahead of his side’s clash with Chelsea this weekend, Solskjaer is adamant that United supporters will be seeing a lot of Van de Beek throughout the campaign and says he has been ‘impressed’ by the midfielder since he arrived at Old Trafford.

‘Donny is fit enough,’ Solskjaer said on Friday.

‘Of course, it’s competition for places, it’s giving him time to settle in and adjust to his new teammates, a new league.

‘He’s absolutely a top footballer, a top personality, so humble and hard working but also eager to play more.

‘As I’ve said so many times, you’ll see him throughout the season, it’s going to be a long, long season and he’s impressed me.’

Meanwhile, Chelsea midfielder Hakim Ziyech, who played alongside Van de Beek at Ajax, has urged his former teammate to ‘stay calm’ following his slow start at United.

‘I think he will need time as well,’ said Ziyech.

‘He comes from a different country, a different style of play.

‘I know for sure it will take some time for him as well to get used to everything and then I know for sure he will bring quality to the squad over there.

‘For him the most important thing right now is to stay calm.’
