Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to sign a centre-back this summer but will postpone a move for a new defender until 2021 as he feels other areas of his squad are in more urgent need of reinforcements.

Donny van de Beek, 24, is United’s only signing so far this summer but Solskjaer had planned on making at least three signings in his planning for the upcoming season.

Jadon Sancho, 20, is United’s priority target and the Dortmund winger would become a certain starter at the Theatre of Dreams if he was to be granted his wish of moving to the club.

However, Solskjaer felt his squad lacked depth in the final stretch of the season and he’s keen to add competition at left-back and centre-back.

While the club are still on the search for a left-back following Sergio Reguilon’s decision to join Spurs, the Daily Mail report that United will postpone a move for a centre-back until next summer.

Dayot Upamecano was considered as a potential partner for Harry Maguire but RB Leipzig wanted upwards of £60million for the Frenchman, which United were unwilling to pay.

It means Axel Tuanzebe could be given a chance to stake a claim to partner Maguire, though Victor Lindelof is likely to continue in place at the start of the season alongside the England international.

Van de Beek is expected to start as United take on Crystal Palace on Saturday in their first Premier League fixture of the season.

United have played just one friendly during their pre-season, losing 1-0 to Aston Villa last Saturday.

Solskjaer felt the side’s extended season meant a packed pre-season was not necessary but their opponents, Palace, have taken a different approach with several friendlies.
