The 23-year-old remains United’s only summer signing following his £40m arrival from Ajax in August.
However, though the Netherlands international has impressed in the Carabao Cup, he’s yet to make a start in the Premier League and he was once again left on the bench for the visit of Tottenham to Old Trafford on Sunday.
Speaking ahead of that game, Evra slammed the club’s decision to sign Van de Beek and says the Dutchman’s omission from the starting line-up proves that United panicked by signing him.
‘First of all, I think the agent of Van de Beek should shut his mouth. I don’t understand why the agent is talking’ said Evra, following comments from Sjaak Swart.
‘But talking about Van de Beek I think every Manchester United fan is disappointed because now it’s three games and he hasn’t even started one game.
‘I don’t think he’s in competition with Pogba, maybe some fans will disagree with me. But Van de Beek, I don’t understand why he’s not starting yet, it’s the third game. It shows you we don’t need him because when you buy a player normally you need him to win the league.
‘Is Van de Beek going to win the league for us? No. That’s the proof.
‘He doesn’t start, I don’t know if it’s injury but the sign you give from outside, the only signing of Man United and three games he hasn’t started. So when you lose a game you already have an excuse.’
Evra believes other areas of the squad required more urgent action and that Van De Beek doesn’t get into the starting XI when everyone is fit.
Asked to name his midfield trio if United’s next match was a cup final, Evra replied: ‘It would be Paul Pogba, definitely. Matic and Fernandes.’Do we need Van de Beek right now? We’re talking about so many players, we are more talking about players who are [potentially] coming than the actual players we’ve got. It tells you the low standard we’ve got right now.’
