The 29-year-old began the season in impressive form, scoring in three successive Premier League games, but he has now gone six matches in all competitions without finding the back of the net.
Lacazette’s costly misses against Leicester and Aston Villa contributed to the damaging defeats Mikel Arteta’s side have suffered in their last two league games at the Emirates stadium.
The former Lyon star has been deployed in his favoured central striking role this term at the expense of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has been stationed out on the left wing and hasn’t managed a goal from open play since the opening day of the campaign.
Merson has been irked by Lacazette’s body language and believes it is time for Arteta to move Aubameyang back into his customary position against Leeds on Sunday.
‘I just think you’ve got to get Aubameyang (in the middle),’ he told Sky Sports. ‘I played out on the wing in my career for part of it.
‘You either have so much of the ball you can’t get enough of it or you never see it for 20 minutes and you’re sitting there doing nothing.
‘They are stopping that so they’ve got to get him in the middle of the pitch.
Lacazette plays like, I watch him and it’s ‘I’m coming off after 70 minutes… so pfft’.’
