With the game finely poised at 0-0 – with Chelsea 1-0 up on aggregate after Olivier Giroud’s spectacular overhead kick in the away leg – Cesar Azpilicueta underhit a backpass to goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Realising Yannick Carrasco was racing in behind him, he grabbed the Belgium international’s waist. Carrasco went down theatrically and the referee didn’t give the penalty.
Replays showed Azpilicueta did tug Carrasco back but VAR didn’t review the decision.
Shortly after, Hakim Ziyech scored from close range to give the Blues a 1-0 lead on the night and a 2-0 advantage on aggregate.
Cole, the former Chelsea midfielder, felt that Thomas Tuchel’s side ‘definitely got away’ with a generous decision from the officiating team.
‘We’ve [Chelsea] definitely got away with one there,’ Cole told BT Sport at half-time.
‘Cesar [Azpilicueta] knows he has undercooked the pass back and knows he’s in trouble.
‘In this day and age, I don’t know why the ref hasn’t gone to VAR and had a look at it.’
‘This is why VAR has become such a farce,’ he added. ‘
Because decisions like that make you think “oh my god how has that not been looked at” from the referee.
‘Once he sees that he 100% gives a penalty.’
