Liverpool were in scintillating form on Tuesday night as they battered Atalanta 5-0 in Bergamo thanks to a hat-trick from Diogo Jota and a goal each from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
It has been a perfect start to the European campaign for the Reds, winning their first three group stage games without conceding a goal.
Bayern Munich have also enjoyed a tremendous start, winning 6-2 at Red Bull Salzburg on Tuesday night to make it three wins from three.
The Germans have conceded three goals in their three games, but with 12 to their name, it hardly matters.
Ferdinand believes that the defending champions and the 2019 winners are the best two sides in the Champions League and Liverpool are also favourites to retain their Premier League title.
‘Along with Bayern in this competition,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport on Liverpool’s position as Champions League favourites.
‘I think in the Premier League they’re the team to beat, they’re the standout team, the team that’s been the most consistent over the last couple of years.
‘But in the Champions League they are really putting some performances in now and they’ve ghosted this league [group stage].’
‘It was the performance we needed,’ the German told BT Sport. ‘My boys played an incredible game. Top, top level. Everybody was involved. It was a really good game
‘I don’t think any system could have defended Sadio, Mo and Diogo tonight.’
