Rio Ferdinand believes Edinson Cavani showed glimpses of the poaching ability he will bring to Manchester United’s attack while he has urged the team to push on from Saturday’s draw with Chelsea.

The Red Devils are still yet to record a win at Old Trafford in the Premier League this season, though they managed to keep a clean sheet against the west Londoners after conceding nine goals against Crystal Palace and Tottenham.

In another welcome bonus, Cavani came off the bench for the final half-hour, nearly scoring with a neat flick from his very first touch, and Ferdinand says the early signs are promising.

‘The introduction of Cavani has only got to be a plus point,’ said the former United centre-back on his FIVE YouTube channel.

‘Just seeing the two chances, the sniffer-poacher goals opportunities that he sniffed out, bodes well for the future.’

In addition to Cavani’s cameo, there were three more players that stood out: ‘Victor Lindelof played great and Harry Maguire played very well at home to Chelsea.

‘Juan Mata last two games has been very good. Fingers crossed they can keep on improving, onwards and upwards.’

Although United’s clean sheet was much-needed, Ferdinand has stressed the importance of converting solid defensive performances into wins especially with another challenging week ahead for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

He continued: ‘I think not having the fans there is playing a big part, maybe would have got them over the line [against Chelsea] and pushed them on to get three points.

‘They’ve got RB Leipzig and Arsenal coming up soon, two tough, big games where they need to get points, where they need to win, they need to get some momentum and get some three points on the board. So difficult yes but I see some signs of improvement.’
