The summer signing from Wolves replaced long-time mainstay Firmino in the starting XI in Italy and gave a superb performance, scoring a hat-trick of brilliant goals to help Liverpool secure a 5-0 victory with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah also netting.
Firmino, meanwhile, has struggled in front of goal for some time, only netting once this season while Jota’s three goals against Atalanta is as many as the Brazilian has managed in his last 20 Champions League appearances.
Although Firmino has been a key part of Liverpool’s success, particularly with his off-the-ball work, Ferdinand says Jota is doing enough to displace him in the team.
‘The forwards, you couldn’t have asked for more,’ said the former Manchester United defender on BT Sport.
‘The recruitment team have done fantastically well, Klopp, bedding him [Jota] in the way he has.
‘I’m sure Firmino will be sitting there compiling a little playback list to give to Klopp to remind him of what he’s capable of doing.
‘Firmino, like it or not, will want to start and this guy’s putting him under huge pressure.’
Jota was delighted with his first hat-trick for Liverpool and when asked if he was in the best form of his career so far, he replied: ‘I’m playing in the best team of my career so far.
‘I don’t know if it’s the best moment of my career but obviously scoring goals is my way of playing football.
‘I’m happy with this, a great win away in Champions League, a good moment and a good night.’
