Rio Ferdinand believes Chelsea should be securing a top-four finish and winning a trophy this season if it’s to be viewed as successful.

The former Manchester United defender played alongside Chelsea manager Frank Lampard for England and knows he will be demanding a lot from himself because he’s ‘accustomed to winning’.

Chelsea finished fourth last season, in what was Lampard’s debut campaign, and finished as runners-up in the FA Cup.

But after a huge summer splurge, bringing in the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Edouard Mendy and Hakim Ziyech, there is added on pressure for Lampard to deliver.

So far, it’s not gone to plan. Chelsea have only won two of their six Premier League matches and lie in 10th place.

They have already been eliminated from the Carabao Cup, losing to Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in the last-16, leaving the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup as their only opportunities to land a trophy.

But Ferdinand thinks silverware is exactly what Chelsea should be aiming for if they want their season to be considered a success.

Frank Lampard of Chelsea talks to the media at the press conference ahead of the UEFA Champions League Group E stage match between Chelsea FC and FC Krasnodar at Krasnodar Stadium on October 27, 2020 in Krasnodar, Russia.

‘Champions League football, finishing in the Champions League positions and winning a cup,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport.

‘I think that’ll be the demands from Frank himself.

‘Frank’s a winner, he’s accustomed to winning at Chelsea, he knows what the owners are asking but also the fans there.

‘And I think he’s got a squad together that are going to be capable of challenging for some silverware once they get in that groove and in that rhythm.’
