Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand says Chelsea’s spending this summer reflects poorly on his former club and that supporters are right to feel ‘frustrated’ with a lack of business.

The Red Devils have made just one signing so far this term with the £40million acquisition of Donny van de Beek from Ajax.

Chelsea, by comparison, have spent over £230million on six players by bringing in the likes of Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz.

United have spent the majority of the summer working on a deal to sign Jadon Sancho but they look set to start the season with just one new signing and Ferdinand says rivals Chelsea have made a mockery of his former club’s tactics.

‘Frank has made signing players like it’s the norm, like it’s easy – water off a duck’s back,’ Ferdinand told the Five YouTube Channel.

‘The difference in the way Chelsea have done their business compared to say my team Man United… there is no noise there’s nothing going on, all you’re seeing is bang – deal. Little bit of talk, bang-deal.

‘That is what’s frustrating for me and all the Man United fans.’

The main deal that is frustrating United supporters is the club’s protracted move for Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho.

The Germans set a £108m asking price for the 20-year-old earlier this summer but United allowed a deadline to pass without meeting Dortmund’s valuation.

Ferdinand says United’s decision-making in the market is puzzling and Chelsea’s shrewd business only serves to make them look worse.

‘Sancho was talked about months ago,’ said Ferdinand.

‘Still not done, it’s so frustrating, I’m not saying deals are easy to be done but Chelsea are showing deals can be done if you put the money down and it’s all done in the right way.’
