Ronald Koeman says Ansu Fati still needs to improve aspects of his game but is destined to have a big future, while he is hopeful that Barcelona will bring in a new striker before the window closes.
After a tumultuous summer, Barca got their La Liga campaign off to a perfect start with a four-minute brace from Fati setting up a 4-0 victory against Villarreal on Sunday.
The teenager, who was rarely used after the restart last season by axed boss Quique Setien, was lively throughout, though Koeman was keen to temper fans’ expectations afterwards.
‘We must highlight the game and performance of Ansu Fati,’ Koeman told reporters after the win.
‘I was complaining a little last week about him not having the maximum level of performance in the pre-season.
‘He is only 17 years old, he will have a great future, but he must improve things. Sometimes he lacks a bit of concentration.
‘His intensity out wide was immense, he played a great game and we took advantage of his qualities.’
Barca lined up without an orthodox number nine, having offloaded Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid, and Koeman is still keen to bring in a striker to provide another option.
He added: ‘It is always good to have another striker for having another plan. It is true we can play without a striker, we have worked on how to exchange positions and to be deep when attacking.
‘But it is important to have other possibilities. We are working and I hope we can occupy the position of the nine.’
