As only two points separate Nigeria from third place in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, Rwanda exacted revenge on Benin Republic in Kigali.
In a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, the Amavubi of Rwanda defeated the Cheetahs of Benin Republic 2-1 on matchday four of Group D on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
Matchday three took place on Friday, October 11, 2024, with the Benin Republic defeating the Amavubi of Rwanda 3-0; however, the outcome of the return leg was different.
Rwanda 2-1 Benin Republic
Although Rwanda dominated the first few exchanges, it was Benin Republic who took the lead.
In the 42nd minute, Hassane Imourane connected with a ball through to him by Andreas Hountondji to give them a lead heading into halftime.
Rwanda started to press the matter in the second half, and Imamishnwe found Innocent Nshuti would provide them an equalizer.
In the 75th minute, Djihad Bizimana’s penalty kick put Rwanda ahead turning the game on its head.
Rwanda would secure their first series victory and now have five points to climb to third in the standings.
With six points Benin Republic now trails the Super Eagles of Nigeria, who are in first place with seven points.
