Steve Nicol says Liverpool should splash out on RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano to cope with their extensive injury problems in defence.
After already seeing Virgil van Dijk ruled out for the majority of the season, Joe Gomez was the latest to be sidelined after damaging a tendon in his knee while on England duty.
The 23-year-old, who has suffered a serious injury to his knee before, has undergone successful surgery and will also be out for an extended period.
Those injuries have left Jurgen Klopp with Joel Matip as his only senior recognised centre-back available, while the Reds hope stand-in central defender Fabinho will be available for their clash against Leicester City after the international break.
Reports claim that Upamecano is Liverpool’s top target in defence and the 22-year-old will be available for around £40million in the summer.
However, Reds hero Nicol believes his former side will be forced into action in January and he wants to see them sign the highly-rated Leipzig centre-back.
‘Oh my goodness, [Liverpool’s title chances] drop a good 20, 25 per cent from where they were, without Van Dijk,’ Nicol told ESPN FC.
‘I think right now Liverpool absolutely, because of this injury, have to go out and spend a lot of money.
‘Joe Gomez, at 23 years of age, has already had two major surgeries. That means the chances of it happening again rise.
‘So I think this forces them into it and they should go and get Upamecano.’
