Sudan edge Algeria on penalties as Senegal see off Uganda to reach CHAN semi-finals

Sudan stunned Algeria with a dramatic penalty shootout victory, while defending champions Senegal scraped past Uganda to book their places in the semi-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Saturday.

In Zanzibar, Sudan held their nerve to beat Algeria 4–2 on penalties after the quarter-final clash finished 1–1 following extra time. Musa Hussein forced an own goal from Algerian defender Ayoub Ghezala shortly after half-time to give Sudan the lead, but Soufiane Bayazid equalised in the 73rd minute to restore parity.

Neither side could find a breakthrough in extra time, leaving the contest to be settled from the spot. Sudanese goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja emerged as the hero, saving two penalties as his side advanced to the last four, where they will face Madagascar.

In Kampala, champions Senegal edged Uganda 1–0 in a tense encounter. Oumar Ba scored the decisive goal in the 62nd minute, meeting Libasse Guèye’s cross with a precise volley at the far post.

Uganda, making their first-ever appearance in the knockout stages of the tournament, created several chances but were denied by Senegal’s well-organised defence and goalkeeper Marc Diouf. Despite the defeat, the Cranes left with pride after a historic run that saw them qualify from a tough group ahead of South Africa and Algeria.
