Austin Eguavoen, temporary coach of the Super Eagles, has reacted to escalating rumors that Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo intends to defect from England to Nigeria.
Adarabioyo, a 27-year-old Nigerian born in England, is qualified to play for the Super Eagles and the Three Lions.
Adarabioyo moved to Chelsea this summer, the center-back, who came up through the ranks at Manchester City, had a stellar season at Fulham.
Tosin Adarbioyo and Nigeria
He has represented England at several junior levels but has not yet been called up to the senior squad.
Adarabioyo is reportedly reevaluating his choices and is willing to play for Nigeria after Gareth Southgate did not select him for the Euros.
Eguavoen recently stated in an interview that Adarabioyo’s case is being examined by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
The Chelsea defender hasn’t spoken to Eguavoen directly, but he praised the player’s talent and stated that any Nigerian player anywhere in the world has the chance to play for their country.
Adarabioyo might strengthen the defensive lineup of the national team if he chooses to play for Nigeria.
While rumors about Adarabioyo possibly switching allegiances persist, Eguavoen is still concentrated on getting the team ready for their next games.
Securing a player of Adarabioyo’s caliber would be a huge boost for Nigeria’s squad, especially with important AFCON qualifiers coming up, including a doubleheader against Libya in two weeks.
