Nigel Winterburn feels Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar would be great signings for Arsenal and would like to see his former club snap up both midfielders, but with only enough money to buy one, Partey would be his choice.
Gunners manager Mikel Arteta is keen to add a central midfielder to his squad before the transfer window closes on 5 October, with Partey and Aouar key targets to fill the role.
Arsenal have only been able to muster offers worth around £30m and must improve them if they want to force through a purchase before 5 October.
Winterburn cannot see his former club coming up with the funds to buy both men and given the choice, it would be Partey who the England international would go for.
‘Players like Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar are players that I’m pleased to see Arsenal linked with. They are different types of players that can bolster a midfield,’ Winterburn told Free Super Tips.
‘I really like Partey because he is quick, solid and powerful off the ball as much as on it.
‘There have been times in the past when Arsenal fail to break things down because of the pace of other teams on the counterattack, which is something that Partey could come in to do.
‘He takes the ball in tight situations and has the power and the ability to go past the opposing midfield players. Once you start to eliminate in this way as Partey does, you tend to open space in and around the opposition’s defence.
‘As always with Arsenal it takes a long time to get things done. We’re just going to have to again wait and see, but I don’t believe that Arsenal have the money to bring them both in.
‘So, we’ve got to wait and see, but my preference of the two would be Thomas Partey.’
After Arsenal’s Premier League defeat to Liverpool on Monday night, another club legend Ian Wright said it is ‘imperative’ they sign Aouar.
‘[They need] Someone who they can pass the ball to, who is comfortable to receive it with someone on his back, who can pop it off, who can turn it round the corner,’ Wright told Premier League Productions.
‘From there Arsenal can play but we can’t do that at the moment. That’s why it’s imperative we get Aouar from Lyon.
‘He’s someone that can get on the ball and get the forwards going. you saw the chances that Ceballos made when he came on. that’s what Arsenal need.’
