Germany assistant manager Marcus Sorg has revealed that Timo Werner will miss the side’s clash with Turkey after picking up an illness.

Werner played the entirety of Chelsea’s last three games against West Brom, Tottenham and Crystal Palace and was selected in Low’s 29-man squad for Germany’s upcoming friendly with Turkey and Nations League matches versus Ukraine and Switzerland.

However, Werner is yet to join up with his international colleagues at their training camp in Cologne and has reportedly been suffering with flu-like symptoms.

Germany remain hopeful that Werner could still feature versus Ukraine and Switzerland but the striker will play no part on Wednesday evening.

‘Timo Werner has a slight cold and won’t join up with the team today,’ Sorg confirmed at a press conference on Tuesday.

The Germany assistant claimed Werner had undergone tests for coronavirus and was still awaiting the results.

‘Several tests have been done, but the results are not in yet,’ he added.

Borg confirmed that Werner’s Chelsea team-mate, Kai Havertz, will start against Turkey and talked up the youngster’s ability to step up for Germany, regardless of whether they are playing friendlies or competitive matches.

‘He is a player who can always raise our game,’ Low said.

‘So I think he will definitely be starting tomorrow.’

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger is also expected to play a part at Cologne’s RheinEnergieSTADION.

‘I will work hard and hopefully we can get some good results.’

Werner has scored just one goal for Chelsea since completing a £47.5million from from Leipzig earlier this summer but has impressed Frank Lampard with his commitment in matches and on the training ground.

Havertz, like Werner, is yet to find the net in the Premier League for his new club but completed a hat-trick in the Blues’ thumping 6-0 win over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.
