Cavani became a free agent over the summer after leaving PSG, where he won six Ligue 1 titles and scored 200 goals in 301 matches.
ESPN say Italian giants Juventus offered Cavani a two-year deal worth €8m a season, while Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid also discussed terms with the prolific striker.
While both moves appealed to Cavani, it is claimed he was immediately attracted to Manchester United because of their global reach and popularity around the world.
It quickly became apparent that the Uruguay legend had chosen Old Trafford as his next destination, with Cavani eventually signing a one-year contract with Manchester United on transfer deadline day.
Cavani was training alone in Paris over the summer and footage emerged this week of the 33-year-old keeping fit in a Manchester United kit.
Following his move to Old Trafford, Cavani said: ‘Manchester United is one of the greatest clubs in the world, so it is a real honour to be here.
‘I’ve worked really hard during the time off and I feel eager to compete and represent this incredible club.
‘I have played in front of some of the most passionate supporters in football during my career and I know that it will be the same in Manchester. I cannot wait to experience the Old Trafford atmosphere, when it is safe for the fans to return.
‘I have had a conversation with the manager and this has increased my desire to wear this beautiful shirt.’
Manchester United suffered a 6-1 defeat to Tottenham before the international break and return to Premier League action next weekend against Newcastle United.
