Barcelona and Spain legend Xavi believes Jack Wilshere should link up with Steven Gerrard at Rangers, where he would have the chance to be the best player in Scotland.
The England international is a free agent after leaving West Ham and is on the look out for a new club with his career in the doldrums at just 28-years-old.
A string of injuries have seen the midfielder unlikely to be offered a chance by a Premier League club this season, having made just 18 appearances for the Hammers over the last two seasons.
Wilshere has been linked with a move north of the border to play under Gerrard and Xavi feels this could be ideal for him as he still holds the midfielder in the highest regard from when they two faced off nine years ago as Arsenal took on Barcelona.
‘I have had a lot of respect for Jack, for many years,’ Xavi told the Daily Record.
‘He played an incredible game against Barcelona (in 2011) and after that I predicted he would go on to be one of the best midfield players in the world and the future of English football. That is a prediction that I am sure would have come true if it were not for some horrible injuries.
‘Rangers could be a very good fit for him. The pace in Scotland is not as fast as England and it would give him more time on the ball. That is where he excels, his vision and passing is incredible.
‘Gerrard will be a big fan of his for sure. They share a lot of similar qualities.
‘It would be a risk because of his injuries but if Rangers could manage to keep him fit and without injury, he would be the best player in Scotland.’
According to former England international Kevin Phillips, talks are well underway for Wilshere to move to Ibrox, and he agrees with Xavi that it would be a great switch for him.
‘I understand Wilshere is deep into negotiations with Rangers,’ Phillips told Football Insider. ‘I think that move would suit him down to the ground. I think it would be a breeze in that league for him.
‘I am big fan of Jack Wilshere. When he is fit and is travelling with the ball, there are not many better. A tremendous left foot and he can ghost past people.
‘If he can stay fit, he would dominate in that league. It would definitely be a fantastic signing for Rangers.’
Gerrard and Wilshere played together for England and the current Rangers boss spoke in glowing terms of the then-Arsenal man’s talent.
‘Jack is so good I am sure when he gets to my age he will be in my position with the armband on talking about another 100-cap player,’ Gerrard said in 2013.
‘It’s his quality, his example in training every day. He wants to learn, he loves England.
‘I’m really paranoid about putting too much pressure on any player but he is that good there is nothing for him to worry about.’
