3 reasons why Barcelona are struggling to register Dani Olmo

FC Barcelona has encountered significant challenges in registering midfielder Dani Olmo for the second half of the season.

Olmo was signed by the Catalan club from Bundesliga side, RB Leipzig in the summer but was only allowed to be registered for the first half of the season, due to Barcelona being unable to meet the league’s wage cap.
The club then missed the December 31 deadline to prove they were compliant with financial fair play rules, meaning the pair were left unregistered going into 2025.
Here are 3 reasons why Barcelona are struggling to register the Spainard:

1. Financial Constraints and La Liga’s Salary Cap

Barcelona’s financial difficulties have led to challenges in meeting La Liga’s stringent salary cap regulations. Despite efforts to balance their books, including selling VIP boxes worth €100 million, the club missed the registration deadline, preventing Olmo’s inclusion in the squad.

2. Regulatory Restrictions on Re-registration

According to current regulations, a player cannot be registered by the same club twice within the same season. Although Barcelona now possesses the necessary funds, this rule has impeded their attempts to re-register Olmo after the initial registration lapsed on December 31.

Both La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have jointly rejected Barcelona’s recent attempts to register Olmo. The club has appealed to Spain’s Sports Council (CSD), which has granted a provisional measure allowing Olmo to play temporarily while awaiting a final decision.
