3 reasons why Tottenham need the Europa League trophy more than Manchester United

As the Europa League final looms, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United prepare for a showdown with silverware and reputational stakes on the line.

While both clubs covet the continental title, there’s a compelling case that Spurs have far more to gain from lifting the trophy.

Here are three reasons why Tottenham need the Europa League crown more than their red-clad rivals from Old Trafford.

1. Ending the Trophy Drought and Rebranding the Club’s Image

Tottenham’s most recent major trophy came in 2008, the League Cup under Juande Ramos. Since then, the club has endured a series of close calls, including a Champions League final in 2019 and a League Cup final defeat in 2021.

The absence of silverware has often cast doubt over the club’s ambitions and credibility among Europe’s elite.

A Europa League title would be more than just a shiny addition to the cabinet. It would serve as a reset button, an emphatic statement that Spurs are not just top-four hopefuls but genuine contenders on the continental stage.

In contrast, Manchester United, winners of the Europa League in 2017 and the FA Cup in 2024, already possess recent silverware and are less desperate for symbolic redemption.

2. Boosting Managerial Legitimacy and Project Confidence

Ange Postecoglou’s debut season brought a breath of fresh air to north London, marked by attacking football and improved consistency.

Yet critics remain skeptical of his ability to deliver in crunch moments. Winning the Europa League would solidify Postecoglou’s position, turning positive performances into tangible success.

A Spurs win would signify a breakthrough moment in Postecoglou’s project, encouraging investment and belief from both fans and the board.

3. Financial and Transfer Market Leverage

Though Manchester United’s global brand provides a commercial safety net, Tottenham operate with tighter margins and a more disciplined financial model.

Europa League glory ensures direct entry into the Champions League, unlocking crucial revenue streams and strengthening the club’s negotiating power in the transfer market.

For Spurs, that means retaining top talents like Son Heung-min and James Maddison, while attracting elite-level recruits to north London.
