The Super Falcons of Nigeria came back from two goals down at halftime to claim a 3-2 victory over the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Mission X Complete! Super Falcons seal 10th WAFCON title with dramatic win over Morocco
Here are three things we learnt.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons refused to give up
Down 2-0 at halftime after goals from Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy, the Super Falcons showed their strength. Substitutes Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini changed the game, with Esther Okoronkwo’s penalty, Folashade Ijamilusi’s equalizer, and Echegini’s late strike securing a well-deserved win.

Madugu’s elite tactics
At the highest level of football, subtle tactical tweaks can be the difference between winning and losing. The Super Falcons looked down and out, but Coach Justin Madugu’s halftime changes turned the tide, targeting Morocco’s weak defense. His tweaks put Nigeria in the ascendancy and eventually brought the Atlas Lionesses to submission.
Experience Wins Out
Nigeria entered this tournament with the tag of serial winners and experience spanning decades. Their perfect record in WAFCON finals (10/10) highlighted their dominance, overcoming Morocco’s home crowd and determination.
