3 things to know about South Africa’s Nigerian-born defender, Ime Okon

Ime Okon’s name has been making waves after coach Hugo Broos included the young defender in South Africa’s squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Born to a Nigerian father and South African mother, the 21-year-old centre-back has quickly risen from local football to the European stage with Hannover 96.

As Bafana Bafana prepare for decisive clashes against Lesotho and Nigeria, here are three things to know about the promising defender.

1. Rising Defensive Talent in Europe

Ime Okon, a 21-year-old centre-back, recently joined German side Hannover 96 from SuperSport United and has made an instant impact in the Bundesliga 2.

He scored his first goal in a 3–1 win over Magdeburg and has quickly established himself as a solid presence in the backline.

On the international stage, he made his debut for South Africa at the 2025 COSAFA Cup, where he impressed with commanding performances and netted his first goal against Zimbabwe.

2. Dual Heritage and International Choice

Okon was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a South African mother, making him eligible for both countries. Despite his Nigerian roots, he chose to represent Bafana Bafana, a decision that has sparked debate among fans, especially with South Africa set to face Nigeria in the World Cup qualifiers.

While some see his call-up as a boost for Hugo Broos’ squad, others question his decision, though many argue his talent should unite rather than divide supporters.

3. Key Role in Crucial Qualifiers

Coach Hugo Broos has named Okon in the final squad for South Africa’s September qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria.

Bafana Bafana currently top Group C with 13 points, while Nigeria sits in fourth on seven points, making these matches decisive for both teams.

Okon’s defensive qualities could prove vital in keeping South Africa’s campaign on track as they push closer to securing a 2026 World Cup ticket.
