AFCON 2025: Libya appoints new coach ahead of doubleheader against Nigeria

Libya have appointed Nasser Al-Hadhiri as the new head coach ahead of the AFCON 2025 doubleheader against Nigeria.

In an attempt to resurrect its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign, Libya, the team that will face the Super Eagles of Nigeria next have named Nasser Al-Hadhiri as their new head coach.

The decision comes after Serbian coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojević was fired following a run of unsatisfactory performances, which included a 1-1 home tie with Rwanda and a 2-1 loss to the Benin Republic.

Al-Hadhiri, who worked under Spanish strategist Javier Clemente in 2014 as an assistant coach, will face a difficult assignment in leading the Mediterranean Knights through the remaining qualifiers.

Libya’s chances of making it to the AFCON competition in Morocco are little to none as they are presently ranked last in Group D.

Libya vs Nigeria preview

LFF President Abdulhakim Al-Shalmani said on the appointment and showed faith in Al-Hadhiri’s abilities to improve the team’s performance.

His job will be to restore the team’s morale and output following the underwhelming outcomes.

The technical group that will try to rekindle Libya’s qualification aspirations will be led by national coach Abu Bakr Al-Harak as his deputy and goalie coach Misbah Shangab.

The two games in October against the Super Eagles of Nigeria should be a tough test for Al-Hadhiri’s revamped Libya.

The first match will start at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 11 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

The second leg will be played on Tuesday, October 15, at 8 p.m. Nigerian time in Benina, which is close to Benghazi.
