The Super Eagles of Nigeria forced Benin Republic to a one-all draw on matchday 5 of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Having qualified for next year’s competition before kick-off against the Cheetars, the Super Eagles were far from their best as they struggled for the entire duration of the match.
Victor Osimhen’s 81st minute header from Moses Simon’s cross helped the Super Eagles aviod defeat against Gernot Rohr’s men.
Football fans took to X to express their displeasure at the performance of the Super Eagles on the night.
“That was a very boring game and not up to standard at all. We are still playing without courage which is very bad,” says a X user.
Another user described the performance as Super Eagles worst display in a long time,
“By far the worst #SuperEagles performance I have seen in a long time”
A X user named, Charles Onyekaba questioned the body language of the players,
“What are we watching? The body language of these Super Eagles players is just disgusting. Ola Aina is not ready. It’s okay to lose, but to be doing so in this manner is just not acceptable.”
Mary Steve belives that the Super Eagles always fail to perform when the hype on them is overboard,
“If you hype them too much, they will disappoint you ☹️, Goodnight oh”
Olarenwaju on X believes that coach Austin Eguavoen is mot good enough to coach the Super Eagles,
“Let’s both coaches swaps teams Gernot Rohr to coach Nigeria and Eguavoen to coach the Benin Rep I bet Gernot Rohr will beat Benin Rep convincingly, Eguavoen is not tactically good enough to coach the super eagles”
Olusola Oseni also shared Olarewaju’s thought on Eguavoen,
“We definitely need a quality coach. Start Okoye for the next match and some friendlies before WC qualifier resume next year, to put Nwabali on his toes. Very disappointing performance from the SE.”
Kimzy belives that the Super Eagles would be knocked out early at AFCON 2025 if they repeat the same performance at AFCON 2025,
“If y’all play in Morocco like the way y’all played tonight, it would be an early exit from the AFCON.”
Another user praised Moses Simon for contributing to Osimhen’s goal while he acknowledged that the Super Eagles had a poor game,
“Not a great match for Super Eagles
Disjointed phases of play, as though we were afraid of Benin Players or Genot Rohr. Still managed to salvage a draw, which is good.”
“The only reason we got something from this match was down to the positive attitude of one guy : MOSES SIMON”
The consensus from football fans online is quite clear, the Super Eagles had a very poor game against the Cheetars.
The Super Eagles have qualified for AFCON 2024 but they will look to round off the qualification series with a win against the Amavubi of Rwanda on Monday.
