Former Super Eagles interim boss Augustine Eguavoen has said Kelechi Iheanacho’s exclusion from Eric Chelle’s squad list ahead of next week’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe is an unfair decision.
Ahead of the must-win fixtures, Chelle released his final squad for the must-win games, leaving out the former Leicester City man.
“It’s not fair on Kelechi Iheanacho if Eric Chelle makes a 39-man list and he isn’t involved.
“If it’s a 23 or 25-man list, that’s fine,” Eguavoen said via Monday Night Football.
Iheanacho has had a rough time over the past 12 months, struggling for game time at Sevilla, before moving to Championship side Middlesbrough on loan in the January transfer window.
Up until now, Iheanacho had been a mainstay in the Super Eagles squad, and this will surely be a blow to the confidence of the 28-year-old, who must work hard to get back in the reckoning.
