The Nigerian U-17 women’s national team, known as the Flamingos, secured their spot in the final qualifying round of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with a decisive 2-0 victory over South Africa’s Bantwana on Saturday, at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State.
This win cemented a 5-1 aggregate triumph, following their earlier 3-1 success in Pretoria.
The Flamingos dominated the match, showcasing their tactical prowess and individual brilliance.
In the 37th minute, Harmony Chidi, who had previously scored twice in the first leg, continued her impressive form by heading in a well-placed cross from Shakirat Moshood, giving Nigeria a 1-0 lead.
Aishat Animashaun doubled the advantage in the 56th minute with a stunning long-range effort that sailed over the South African goalkeeper, Samekelise Mthembu, effectively sealing the match.
The Flamingos entered the second round of qualifiers with confidence, having been granted a bye in the first round due to their commendable third-place finish in the previous U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Their aggregate victory over South Africa propels them into the final qualifying stage, where they will face the winner between Botswana and Algeria.
