Chelsea’s top-four hopes dented by Brentford stalemate

Chelsea’s aspirations for a top-four Premier League finish suffered a setback as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday.

Manager Enzo Maresca made five changes to the starting lineup that secured a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last Thursday.

Notably, key attacking players Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer, and Pedro Neto began the match on the bench, with Maresca opting to rest them ahead of the upcoming UEFA Conference League fixture against Legia Warsaw.

The first half saw limited goal-scoring opportunities. Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku headed high and wide early on, while Brentford’s Yoane Wissa failed to capitalize on a volleyed cross from Bryan Mbeumo.

In the second half, Maresca introduced Jackson, Palmer, and Neto to invigorate Chelsea’s attack. Despite their efforts, the Blues struggled to break down Brentford’s resolute defense.

Brentford had late chances through Mbeumo and Sepp van den Berg but were unable to find the net.

Brentford’s goalkeeper, Mark Flekken, made crucial saves to deny efforts from Neto and Reece James, ensuring the match ended goalless.

This draw extends Brentford’s winless streak at home in 2025 but provides a valuable point as they remain in 12th place in the league standings.

The result leaves Chelsea in fourth place with 53 points, just two points ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand and are set to play Manchester United later today.

Chelsea’s focus now shifts to their European campaign, with a UEFA Conference League quarter-final against Legia Warsaw on Thursday.

Domestically, they will host Ipswich Town next Sunday as they continue their pursuit of Champions League qualification.
