3 reasons why Djurgårdens can shock Chelsea

As Chelsea prepares to face Djurgården in the UEFA Conference League semi-final first leg tomorrow in Stockholm, the Swedish underdogs are aiming to defy expectations and secure a historic victory.

Despite Chelsea’s status as favorites, several factors suggest that Djurgården could spring a surprise.

1. Home advantage and unfamiliar playing surface

The match will take place at Stockholm’s 3Arena, where Djurgården enjoys robust home support.

The stadium’s artificial pitch has been a topic of concern, even among Djurgården players, with striker August Priske describing it as a “shitty pitch.”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has also expressed apprehension about the surface, citing potential injury risks and its impact on play. This unfamiliar terrain could disrupt Chelsea’s rhythm and provide Djurgården with a tactical edge.

2. Emerging talents making a mark

Djurgården’s journey to the semi-finals has been propelled by standout performances from young talents.

Nineteen-year-old Japanese left-back Keita Kosugi has been instrumental, notably scoring a pivotal volley against Rapid Vienna in the quarter-finals. Midfielder Tobias Gulliksen has also impressed, contributing crucial goals and adapting effectively to a central attacking role.

Their dynamism and confidence could pose significant challenges to Chelsea’s defense.

3. Chelsea’s squad rotation and potential complacency

Chelsea enters the match amidst a congested fixture schedule, with a crucial Premier League clash against Liverpool looming.

Manager Enzo Maresca may opt to rotate his squad, potentially fielding less experienced players. Injuries and suspensions have already sidelined key figures like Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke, and Mykhaylo Mudryk.

This scenario could lead to a less cohesive team performance, offering Djurgården an opportunity to capitalize.
