The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) produced another exciting round of fixtures today as teams battled for points with just two games remaining in the season.
El Kanemi Warriors delivered one of the day’s biggest surprises by defeating newly crowned champions, Remo Stars, 2–0. The Maiduguri-based side showed determination from the first whistle to overcome Remo Stars, who had already secured the title.
In Port Harcourt, Rivers United edged Enugu Rangers 1–0 in a closely fought contest. The home side showed composure keeping their slim hopes of a continental spot alive.
Over in Makurdi, Lobi Stars were stunned at home by Nasarawa United, who came from behind to secure a 2–1 win in a thrilling performance.
Enyimba continued their push for a top-four finish with a solid 2–0 win over Kwara United. The People’s Elephant were dominant throughout, displaying the kind of form that has made them perennial contenders.
Bendel Insurance also got the job done at home with a narrow 1–0 victory against Akwa United in a tense affair in Benin City.
In Owerri, Heartland gave their fans something to cheer about with a 2–0 win over Plateau United, a result that could prove crucial in their fight to avoid relegation.
Katsina United defeated fierce northern rivals Kano Pillars 1–0 in a tense derby, while Niger Tornadoes and Abia Warriors settled for a 1–1 draw in a game that saw both teams waste late chances to snatch all three points.
Shooting Stars claimed bragging rights in the southwest derby with a 1–0 victory over Sunshine Stars in Ibadan, showing signs of consistency late in the season. The most dramatic match of the day came in Lagos, where Ikorodu City edged Bayelsa United 3–2 in a five-goal thriller, to move into fourth place on the table.
Despite today’s defeat, Remo Stars remain top of the standings with 68 points and are already champions. Rivers United strengthened their second-place standing with 61 points, while Abia Warriors, Enyimba, and Ikorodu City continue to battle for the remaining continental slots. The final two matchdays promise more twists as the season nears its conclusion.
