Daniel Amokachi: Biography, Achievements, Net Worth of Super Eagles Atlanta 1996 hero

Daniel Amokachi is a former Super Eagles forward or support striker. Amokachi played in arguably the finest era of Nigeria’s football. The striker was instrumental to Super Eagles’ continental and global success in the 1990s.

Amokachi had a decent career in Europe and made an important mark in the UEFA Champions League while playing for Club Brugge.

Fondly called “The Bull”, Amokachi used shear strength, speed and agility to beat defenders during his active days as a footballer. Amokachi also had a decent height used to great effect.

Daniel Amokachi formed partnership with the late Rashidi Yekini in the Super Eagles as they helped the team win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations.

Amokachi grew from the ranks in the Nigeria Premier Football League before moving to Europe where he featured for Club Brugge, Everton and Besiktas.

Upon retiring from football, Amokachi took up coaching and managed teams in the Nigeria Premier Football League: Nasarawa United, Enyimba, Ifeanyi Una among others.

Daniel Amokachi also served as coach of the Super Eagles WAFU team and assistant to late Steven Keshi en route to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Where is Daniel Amokachi from? The former Super Eagles striker hails from Benue State, Idoma precisely, in the North Central area of Nigeria. He was born on 30 December 1972 in the City.

Daniel Owefin Amokachi, the former Nigerian forward is currently 52 years old.

 

How tall is Amokachi?

The forward is feet and 11 inches tall. Amokachi had quite an intimidating figure as he used his frame to bully defenders off the ball and create space for himself in the box.

 

Career

Daniel Amokachi started his career in Kaduna with Ranchers Bees in Kaduna and featured for the side between 1989 and 1990 before moving to Europe.

Amokachi joined Club Brugge in 1990. Daniel Amokachi set the record as the first player to score in the new format of the UEFA Champions League as Club Brugge beat CSKA Moscow 1-0 in 1992. Daniel Amokachi scored 37 goals in 93 appearances for Club Brugge over a five-year period.

Premier League experience with Everton.

Welsh manager Mike Walker brought Amokachi to Everton in 1995. Daniel Amokachi joined the Toffees for £3m after his impressive outing at Brugge.

Amokachi helped Everton win the FA Cup that season as he scored two goals in the semi-final against Tottenham. He is remembered for substituting himself into the match while Paul Rideout was receiving medical attention.

Unfortunately, Amokachi didn’t live up to expectations at Everton and he struggled to get adequate minutes on the pitch. Amokachi was third choice to Paul Rideout and Duncan Ferguson.

However, he stepped in for the latter as he served a jail term for six weeks for an offense he committed in Scotland 18 months earlier.

Daniel Amokachi

Amokachi won the FA Charity Shield in 1995 and scored 14 goals in 53 matches for Everton before leaving for Besiktas in the Turkish Super League.

Daniel Amokachi joined Besiktas in 1996 for £1.75 million. Amokachi won the Turkish Cup and Turkish Super Cup in 1998. His football career was fast-declining after he left Besiktas in 1999.

He went on to sign for 1860 Munich, and Colorado Rapids but his struggle with injuries ended his relationship with these clubs as his contract was cancelled at the former while he was released at the latter. Amokachi’s football career came to a halt in 2002 after struggling with injuries and fitness.

 

Super Eagles and Atlanta 1996 Triumph

Former Super Eagles coach Clemens Westerhof discovered Daniel Amokachi at Ranchers Bees and took him to the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria.

Daniel Amokachi was part of the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Tunisia and the Atlanta 1996 triumph as he scored in the final against Argentina.

Amokachi scored Nigeria’s second goal in its first World Cup appearance at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA. Amokachi scored in the 3-0 win over Bulgaria in its first match. Amokachi also scored in the 2-0 win over Greece.

Managerial Career

Daniel Amokachi had stints with Ifeanyi Ubah, Nasarawa United, Enyimba and recently Lobi Stars in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Amokachi also served as assistant to the late Shuaibu Amodu and the late Stephen Keshi. Daniel Amokachi was assistant to Keshi and led the team to the AFCON title in 2013.

Amokachi led the Super Eagles team B to the WAFU Nations Cup triumph as Nigeria scored 15 goals and conceded just once in the tournament hosted in Abeokuta and Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria.

Former president of Nigeria, Major General Muhammadu Buhari named Amokachi as Nigeria’s football ambassador in 2015.

Daniel Amokachi is a football analyst on cable television and also a commentator. He is also a brand ambassador for some brands in the country. Amokachi is currently working with CAF at the ongoing Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
