Felix Agu: 3 things to know about Nigeria’s new Super Eagles call-up

Felix Agu, the 25-year-old full-back from Werder Bremen, has officially received clearance to represent Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

This follows confirmation from the German Football Federation that Agu has never played in an official senior or youth match for Germany, despite his two appearances for their U21 team in 2019.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has now confirmed his eligibility, paving the way for his debut in upcoming fixtures, including the Unity Cup in London.

Here are three key things to know about the versatile defender:

1. Dual Heritage and National Team Aspirations

Born in Osnabrück, Germany, to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Agu holds dual citizenship. He previously represented Germany at the U21 level but has expressed a strong desire to play for Nigeria.

In a March 2025 interview, Agu shared that playing for Nigeria would be a dream come true, especially alongside his Werder Bremen teammate Justin Njinmah, who also harbors ambitions to represent the Super Eagles.

2. Bundesliga Experience and Versatility

Agu made his Bundesliga debut in November 2020 and has since become a key player for Werder Bremen.

He has accumulated over 90 Bundesliga appearances, primarily as a full-back, but also as a midfielder when needed. His versatility allows him to play on both the left and right flanks, offering tactical flexibility for the Super Eagles.

3. Impressive 2024–25 Bundesliga Season

In the 2024–25 season, Agu has been one of the standout full-backs in the Bundesliga. He scored three goals and registered an assist in 21 appearances, contributing significantly to Werder Bremen’s eighth-place finish.

Notably, Agu led the league in penalties won, drawing three—an indication of his attacking threat and ability to exploit defensive weaknesses.

With his blend of experience, versatility, and recent form, Felix Agu is poised to make a significant impact for the Super Eagles. His inclusion adds depth to Nigeria’s defensive options and brings a fresh dynamic to the squad.
