Inzaghi departs Inter Milan after Champions League final defeat; set to join Al Hilal

Simone Inzaghi has officially stepped down as head coach of Inter Milan, just days after the club’s devastating 5–0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final.

The defeat, marking the heaviest in a Champions League final in recent history, concluded a season that saw Inter narrowly miss out on the Serie A title to Napoli by a single point and exit the Coppa Italia in the semi-finals.

Inzaghi’s departure was confirmed in a mutual agreement with Inter’s management. During his four-year tenure, he secured six trophies, including one Serie A title, two Coppa Italia victories, and three Italian Super Cups.

Despite these achievements, the recent string of setbacks, culminating in the Champions League final loss, led to his exit.

The 49-year-old coach is now poised to take over at Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal. Reports indicate that Inzaghi has agreed to a lucrative three-year contract worth €26 million per season, making him one of the highest-paid managers globally.

At Al Hilal, he will lead a squad featuring notable players such as Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Inter Milan now faces the urgent task of appointing a new head coach ahead of their FIFA Club World Cup campaign, which begins on June 17 against Monterrey. Potential candidates include former players Cesc Fàbregas, currently coaching Como, and Roberto De Zerbi from Olympique de Marseille.

In a farewell message, Inzaghi expressed his gratitude to the club’s fans and staff, stating, “I will always carry Inter in my heart.”
