The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has responded to Victor Boniface’s “retirement” post, which circulated on social media after Super Eagles’ one-all draw against Russia last Friday.

The Bayer Leverkusen striker played until the second half of the match before he was replaced by Genk striker Tolu Arokodare, who scored the equalizer.

After the match, Victor Boniface announced his retirement from the national team in an Instagram post he shared on his page.

“Proud to play for my country, and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment — the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I don hang boot,” the 24-year-old wrote in the since-deleted post.

NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, in a chat with All Nigeria Soccer, says it was obvious Victor Boniface was only joking with the post he put out.

“You should have noticed that he was jesting. He immediately deleted the post.”

Boniface’s post sparked confusion among fans online, as some considered it shocking while others saw it as a response to the criticisms of his performance in the national team.

The striker is yet to score for the Super Eagles after 13 appearances.
