Lagos will make history on October 4 and 5, 2025, when it becomes the first African city to host the UIM E1 World Championship, an all‑electric powerboat racing series.
Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu confirmed the announcement after attending the Monaco leg of the championship over the weekend.
As the world’s premier zero‑emissions marine motorsport, E1 features hydrofoil‑enabled RaceBird boats capable of speeds exceeding 90 km/h. The series emphasizes sustainability, marine innovation, and “blue economy” development.
The Lagos event represents the second season of the championship and adds the city to a prestigious global line‑up including Monaco, Venice, Dubrovnik, Lago Maggiore, and Miami.
It marks a significant milestone for Africa, positioning the continent at the forefront of clean‑energy sporting events and sustainable marine transport.
Governor Sanwo‑Olu lauded the achievement as a symbol of Lagos’ readiness to embrace innovation and environmental leadership. He emphasized the opportunity for the event to highlight Lagos’ culture, energy, and entrepreneurial spirit on the international stage.
Strategic partners, including Afreximbank and celebrity-backed teams such as Team Drogba, have pledged support, underscoring the broader economic and technological potential of the event.
